Dental health

March 2nd, 2009

Consult with your health insurance administrator about your dental insurance benefits.

Proper dental care is essential to dental health and pocket book savings. If you do not get the proper dental care you need you will likely suffer some dental problems. Most dental problems are not cheap wither. Just a root canal can cost around $800 or more. You need to make sure you have good dental insurance coverage and take advantage of it’s benefits. Most of these plans allow for two cleanings a year. Cleanings are essential for gum health. Gum disease can lead to tooth loss and some very hefty dental bills.

It is recommended you get your teeth cleaned every 6 months. A cleaning also involves screenings that can detect cancer and other dental problems. It helps keep the gums health and helps to maintain good oral health by keeping you aware.

Oral cancer can happen in any part of the mouth or throat. The most common place is the tongue or underneath of the mouth. Symptoms can include white or red patches, sores that do not heal, loose teeth, bleeding in the mouth, lump in neck, earache or swelling in the throat or mouth.

Vitamins can be good for you.

February 24th, 2009

Are inexpensive brands that offer the basics as good as more expensive brands? Labels should indicate that the multivitamin includes 100 percent of the Daily Value (DV) of most essential nutrients. Large doses (more than the label recommends) of nutrients and extras such as herbs, enzymes and amino acids should be avoided because of possible health risks.

Should I get a multivitamin with extra iron? Women that still have a monthly cycle should take a multivitamins with iron. This can help replenish iron lost during menstruation. Women that no longer have a monthly cycle, men, and children should obtain sufficient amounts of iron through diet.

Women should also consider taking additional Calcium with their multivitamin. Most multivitamins don’t provide the amount of calcium women need, especially during and after menopause when bone loss accelerates. Around age 50, women should be getting 1,200 to 1,500 milligrams of calcium daily. Calcium is absorbed best when taken several times a day in amounts of 500 milligrams.

You need to make sure your doctor is aware of the vitamins and other supplements you are taking. This is important because some vitamins or supplements may not be recommended with certain conditions or other medications you are taking. For example if you have cirrhosis of the liver you do not want to consume vitamins that are processed through the liver such as iron.

Need help finding insurance?

February 23rd, 2009

For many health insurance is too confusing to even worry about. They put it off and put it off, sometimes until it is too late. Health insurance is one of the most important financial decisions you will make in your life. Not to mention your health depends on it!

The reason so many do not understand it all is that, health insurance as does any insurance or policy for that matter has it’s own language. Good news is you do not have to master the language to make a wise and well educated decision when it comes to find health insurance for your family.

First of all, remember that even if you have health insurance you will incur some expense. Co pays, deductibles, co insurance and certain services that may be not covered under the policy. So you may still need to negotiate prices with the doctor and shop around for things such as services and prescriptions.

You should utilize the web for you search. the web has a wealth of information and tools to help you find plan details as well as shop premium prices. A good site to start with is your state department of insurance site.. not only do they have a wealth of information they often list local agents. that can help.

Warning! Tennessee health insurance is imporatant.

It does not matter if you purchase a short term temporary or traditional PPO plan it is important not to let your health insurance lapse.  It is a matter of maintaining a good financial backbone.

There are also health saving account (Hsa) plans that you can enroll in that you have a deductible and you add money to a non taxable account to pay for any health related expenses. These plans usually have a high deductible but a low monthly premium. The best thing is your money is not taxed as long as it is used for medical reasons.

An additional option would be to get an accident policy. The premiums for these are significantly less than that of health insurance. They will pay you defined amounts of money for each medical situation. For example if you have to go to the doctor for a cold they will send you $50 for each visit. This type of plan would help you not to get to far into debt over medical coverage.

The best thing for you to do is to go online and look at all your options. Everyone’s situation and needs are different. Having health coverage is like gambling, some people will walk away with more money by not paying for health insurance, and get lucky enough not to have any medical expenses while with out it. Then there are others that will walk away with debt into the hundreds of thousands of dollars.

In conclusion, it is best to have some kind of coverage rather than nothing at all. You don’t have to pick the plan with all the bells and whistles available. You can research or get with a broker and find coverage that will keep you from going into debt if you do have medical issues.

Cobra Alternative - Temporary or Individual Health Insurance

January 29th, 2009

The unemployment rates are skyrocketing. You hear it every day on the radio and on the news. You hear it from your friends. Companies are laying of left and right. Companies you never imagined. Financially we are nervous!

The job search market is saturated. What this means is extended days of unemployment and a risk of no health insurance. Health insurance is one financial risk we can not afford. We must have our health insurance in place. So it is time we look at the options.

When we lose a job we are forced to decide where to make cuts. Our income (unemployment) and budget often times need re-adjusting to make it through a down time. One of the unfortunate bills many people choose to cut is health insurance. Financially this is a huge mistake.

If you are one of those uninsured and you walk outside and slip on the ice and brake a leg you could be in trouble. Test, scans, surgery, equipment can easily cost $3000 or more. Could you handle a bill like that on a limited income?

Even if you have the COBRA option, many times it is just way out of budget. COBRA is very expensive. Once you take away the percentage your employer paid and then add administrative cost it can easily double or triple in premium. No wonder people give up on health insurance so often.

There are other options besides COBRA. Most of the major carriers offer individual health insurance to consumers. They have tons of options in plans. Anything from the works to the bare bone emergency plan. What ever you are looking for can be found and often for a fraction of how much COBRA will cost you.

The advantage to staying with the COBRA option is that if you have a medical condition that requires frequent visits or a expensive medication it will be covered. If you switch to a individual plan, they could exclude, waiver or decline you based on this condition. It is important to consider this.

So if you find yourself out of work and facing the reality of no insurance or expensive insurance don’t give up. Search the options, there are some! Individual health insurance is often a great solution for many. Temporary health insurance is also a good option, also offered by most of the major carriers.
